Joint Christian Education Project to Study Response to Changing Society

Diocesan Press Service. February 6, 1968 [62-3]

The national education departments of the Episcopal Church, United Presbyterian Church in the U. S. A. and United Church of Christ have agreed to work together on common Christian Education concerns as they look forward to the 1970's.

Education Executives of the three communions have announced the appointment of an Exploration Team of six members, two from each denomination. The team will report back to their home departments next December.

The team will spot major issues and questions the churches must face to develop future educational plans that will be appropriate for a rapidly changing technological society.

First meeting of the team will be February 15 to 18 in Philadelphia.

The announcement was made by Mrs. David R. Hunter, director of the Department of Christian Education of the Executive Council of the Episcopal Church, the Rev. William A. Morrison, general secretary of the Board of Christian Education, UPUSA, and the Rev. Edward Powers, executive secretary of the Division of Christian Education of the Board for Homeland Ministries, UCC.

The team will work with experts in general education concerned with future trends and with local and regional church leaders already engaged in planning for ecumenical education. They will also use findings from experimental projects being conducted by the three denominations including the Presbyterian Study of education in the city church, the United Church of Christ summer project on educational planning by local ecumenical teams and the Episcopal experience in community training. The announcement said that the team will continue to work with the educational agencies of other denominations such as the NCC, the Consultation on Church Union and seminaries. Contacts with Roman Catholic and Jewish educators will be maintained and findings will be shared with these colleagues as they become available.

Members of the Exploration Team are: Dr, Oscar Hussel and the Rev. George Allen, UPUSA: the Rev, Scott Libbey and Dr, Ruth Sprague, UCC; and the Rev. Reid Isaac and the Rev, Lester McManis, Episcopal Church,
