Joint Commission on Ecumenical Relations Begins Triennium's Work

The wide range of the Episcopal Church's ecumenical involvement became apparent as the Joint Commission on Ecumenical Relations organized for the next triennium during its meeting Jan. 29 - 31 in Washington, D.C.

Among the major decisions of the meeting, attended by 30 members and consultants, was the election of officers and the naming of the Episcopal delegation to the Consultation on Church Union.

Following the meeting, the Rt. Rev. Robert F. Gibson, Bishop of Virginia, who was reelected chairman of the Joint Commission, announced the delegation to the Consultation and his fellow officers.

Bishop Gibson, himself, will be chairman of the delegation. Other members are: the Rt. Rev. G. Francis Burrill, Bishop of Chicago; the Rt, Rev. Stephen F. Bayne, Jr., Director of the Executive Council's Overseas Department; the Rt. Rev, Ned Cole, Jr., Bishop Coadjutor of Central New York; Dr. Albert T. Mollegen, Virginia Theological Seminary; Dr. William J. Wolf, Episcopal Theological School; the Rev. Warner R. Traynham of Roxbury, Mass.; Dr. Peter Day, Ecumenical Officer; and Dr. Marianne Micks, Western College for Women. Designated as the standby alternate for the next meeting of the Consultation in Dayton, Ohio, March 25 - 28 is Dr. George A. Shipman, Seattle, Wash. Designated as regular alternates and as accredited visitors for that meeting are the Rt. Rev. John E. Hines, Presiding Bishop, and Dr. Arthur A. Vogel of Nashota House. Designated as accredited visitor is Dr. John A. Macquarie of Union Theological Seminary, New York.

Reelected as officers, along with Bishop Gibson, were the Rev. John V. Butler, rector of Trinity Church, New York, vice chairman; the Rev. James W. Kennedy, director and editor of Forward Movement Publications, secretary; Paul B. Anderson of White Plains, N. Y., treasurer; and Peter Day of New York, the Ecumenical Officer, assistant treasurer.

Among other items of business was the reorganization of the various committees which are a part of the Joint Commission and the naming of their officers and members.

These committees include the Council on Relations with Eastern Churches, the Rt. Rev. Lauriston L. Scaife, chairman; The Committee on Relations with the Roman Catholic Church, the Rt. Rev, Donald H. V. Hallock, chairman; the Committee on Relations with other Churches, the Rt. Rev. Edward R. Welles, chairman; the Committee on Councils of Churches, the Rt. Rev. J. Brooke Mosley, chairman; the Committee on Jewish-Episcopal Dialogue, the Rt. Rev. G. Francis Burrill, chairman; the Theological Committee, Dr. Arthur A. Vogel, chairman; the Committee on the Wider Episcopal Fellowship, the Rt. Rev. John S. Higgins, chairman.

The next meeting of the full Commission will be held at Trinity Institute, New York, Feb. 4 - 6, 1969 with meetings of the above committees as called by the chairman.
