WASHINGTON, D. C. -- The Rt. Rev. William F. Creighton, Bishop of Washington, today announced the election of The Reverend Canon Clement W. Welsh, Ph. D., to succeed Canon Frederick H. Arterton as Warden of the College of Preachers, effective on September 1, 1972. The announcement was made following the monthly meeting of the Cathedral Trustees of which Bishop Creighton is chairman.

The Reverend Canon Clement W. Welsh has been Canon Theologian for Washington Cathedral and Director of Studies at the cathedral's College of Preachers since 1963. As Director of Studies, Dr. Welsh has had primary responsibility for the educational program of the College. The College is a post-graduate training and conference center for Episcopal clergymen. During the year it welcomes about 500 clergymen from all over the country to weekly conferences chiefly concerned with the privileges and problems of preaching. Dr. Welsh supervised daily studies and the research programs of the resident Fellows. As Canon Theologian, he is in charge of the cathedral's educational ministry and he serves also as Canon Librarian in charge of the cathedral libraries.

A native of Oakmont, Pa., Dr. Welsh grew up on Long Island, N.Y. He received his A.B. degree from Harvard University in 1934 and attended both Union Theological Seminary in New York and the Episcopal Theological School in Cambridge, Mass., where he received his B.D. in 1937. He later returned to Harvard and obtained a Ph.D. there in 1958.

Ordained in the Diocese of Massachusetts, Dr. Welsh served as rector of St. James Church in South Groveland, Mass., from 1939 to 1942. He then became Professor of Theology at Bexley Hall, the Divinity School of Kenyon College, Gambier, Ohio, and Professor of Religion and Chairman of the Department of Religion at the College. He served as Chaplain at the College and Director of the Kenyon Singers for several years.

The Reverend Frederick H. Arterton, D.D., a native of Norwich, England, became Warden of the College of Preachers in 1960. Prior to his appointment he served as Associate Warden for four years. He has been a Canon of Washington Cathedral since 1956.
