NEW YORK, N.Y. -- The General Convention Special Program (GCSP) of the Episcopal Church announces the funding of two projects in its program to support justice and self-determination for the poor and powerless.

The Screening and Review Committee, which acts on applications for funding, has approved a grant of $10, 000 to "The Hawaiians," Honolulu, Hawaii, and a grant of $5, 000 to Pan-African Skills (PAS), New York City.

"The Hawaiians," which was founded in 1970, is committed to improving housing among the people of Hawaii. The organization has more than 5,000 members on the five major islands of Hawaii.

"The Hawaiians " is involved in lobbying for new public policy concerning the Hawaiian Homes Act. The organization is seeking the release of land to poor and displaced Hawaiians for farming and housing construction.

Pan-African Skills, founded two years ago, is a part of the African Commission of the National Committee of Black Churchmen (NCBC). PAS was instrumental in the development of the NCBC African Conference in Tanzania, East Africa, in August, 1971.

The GCSP grant of $5, 000 will assist PAS in its work of recruiting 500 skilled Afro-Americans to work in Tanzania at the invitation of the Tanzanian Government.
