Two Dioceses Combine Publication

Diocesan Press Service. November 30, 1972 [72197]

PEORIA, ll. (DPS) -- Two dioceses in the Episcopal Church have announced an experimental plan to publish a magazine jointly, reflecting the interests and news of both dioceses.

The Diocese of Quincy and the Diocese of Springfield, both in the state of Illinois, will begin publication of a combined magazine in January, 1973, as a one-year trial venture. The eight-page magazine, to be published 10 times a year, will be mailed to every communicant in the two dioceses.

The new publication, tentatively named "The Downstate Churchman, " will replace "The Springfield Churchman" and "The Communicator," of Quincy, the present publications of the two dioceses. The combined publication will be co-edited by the Rev. Paul Baker, rector of Christ Church, Collinsville, Ill., in the Diocese of Springfield, and the Rev. H. Camp Gordinier, rector of St. James Church, Griggsville, Ill., in the Diocese of Quincy.

The merging of the diocesan publications is a part of a "Plan of Joint Action" approved by synod action this fall in both Springfield and Quincy. Other joint endeavors planned by the two jurisdictions include youth conferences, summer camps, mission strategy, adult education, Christian education consultation assistance, and clergy retreats.

The two dioceses have invited the participation of the Diocese of Chicago and other contiguous dioceses in any of the aspects of the plan in any way they may find appropriate.

The Bishop of Quincy is the Rt. Rev. Francis William Lickfield, and the Bishop of Springfield is the Rt. Rev. Albert W. Hillestad.
