Requirements Defined for Anglican-Methodist Merger

Diocesan Press Service. January 27, 1969 [73-15]

LONDON, England -- The Anglican Convocation of Canterbury has voted that the Church of England-Methodist plan for merger must receive the support of 75 percent of the Church of England's Bishops and clergy before "Phase One" of the plan can go into effect.

The Convocation made its decision following an address by the Archbishop of Canterbury who commended the plan and warned that rejection would mean "a big wave of impatience" to bring about inter-communion between the two Church bodies "without any regard to Church order or organic unity. "

The Convocation of York has yet to vote on the issue.
