NEW YORK, N. Y. -- A new, comprehensive program designed to alleviate hunger in America was launched during the week of January 13 by the National Council of Churches' Committee on Hunger.
The Committee, under the chairmanship of the Rev. Ian McCrea (Director for Human Rights of the Christian Church, Indianapolis), adopted a program aimed at informing churches of the dimensions of hunger in the United States, promoting legislation related to hunger relief, collecting money and food for immediate short- term needs, and developing action groups around food distribution.
The committee intends to ask for full use of federal programs already available, and to work with organizations, such as welfare rights groups, whose aim is the securing of food for the hungry. Demonstration projects designed to support and strengthen self-development among poor people are also planned.
The effort, which is part of the NCC's Crisis in the Nation program, will be based on an exhaustive study of hunger in America by the NCC 's Department of Research.
Among the social action executives attending the meeting was the Rev. Reinhart B. Gutmann of the Episcopal Church's Executive Council staff.
