NEW ORLEANS, La. -- The Rev. W. Herbert Scott, Jr., Associate Rector of Trinity Episcopal Church in New Orleans, has accepted the appointment from The Rt. Rev. Otis Charles, Bishop of Utah, as Director and Vicar of Saint Christopher's Mission in Bluff, Utah. St. Christopher's, an Episcopal work with the Navajo Indians, is the largest congregation of Episcopalians in the Diocese of Utah. Father Scott will assume his new post on April 19.
Prior to his present position with Trinity, Father Scott was Editor of publications for the Executive Council of the Episcopal Church in New York City.
His ministry in Louisiana has also included the editorship of the Diocesan newspaper, Churchwork, member of The Bishop and Council of the Diocese of Louisiana, and Chairman of the Department of Communication. Father Scott has also had extensive training and experience in Human Relations, group counseling and community organization. He is a director of the Board of Community Service Center, an agency working for the rehabilitation of ex-offenders.
Father Scott is a graduate of Bethany Nazarene College in Oklahoma and Union Theological Seminary, New York City. He is married to the former Sue Wall of LaGrange, Illinois, and they have one son, John Andrew, age nine.
St. Christopher's Mission was begun 30 years ago by The Rev. H. Baxter Liebler in that part of the Navajo Reservation called the "Utah strip." Over the years the Mission has flourished and grown strong. It is now beginning to develop full Navajo leadership with Navajo teachers, preachers, and eventually priests.
Father Scott in accepting the appointment, said: "I am excited to have been chosen by the Mission Council of St. Christopher's to lead them during this period when leadership is moving into Navajo hands, and hope that together we can turn their dreams into reality. "
