National Conference Scheduled for Congregational Librarians

PORTLAND, Ore. -- A national conference for all persons interested in church and synagogue libraries will be held in Portland, Oregon, July 22 to 24, 1973, designed to offer practical guidance in organizing and operating such libraries effectively.

The event is sponsored jointly by the Church and Synagogue Library Association, a national ecumenical organization formed in 1967 to encourage and aid the development of improved library service for local congregations, and the Pacific Northwest Association of Church Libraries, which is active in that region.

Speakers and leaders for the three-day program are drawn from qualified persons in the library and education world, both in the United States and Canada. Workshop sessions will deal with various aspects of librarianship, including cataloging books, principles of book selection, promition of reading, library management and handling of non- book materials.

Featured in the program will be book exhibits of leading publishers and tours of religious libraries in the Portland area.

Theme of the conference is "Blazing a Trail." Keynote speaker is Dr. Robert Sylwester, Professor of Education at the University of Oregon, who will discuss the shared role that librarians play with respect to the development of children and adults.

"The Oldest Religious Library : The Dead Sea Scrolls " is the title of a talk to be given by The Rev. E. Linwood Brandis of Vancouver, Washington, who will display his collection of artifacts, pottery and scrolls from Qumran.

Mrs. Alberta Hawse, author of Vinegar Boy (Moody Press, c 1970), will give the address at the annual awards banquet. Several other writers will be present for a "Meet the Author" autograph party.

Conference sessions, accommodations, and meals will be based on the campus of Lewis and Clark College in Portland, which has facilities for individuals, couples and families.
