Episcopal Evangelism Conference Held

GLENDALE, Calif. -- A Southwest Regional Episcopal Conference on Evangelism was held at St. Mark's Church here May 29-31. The event was sponsored by the Episcopal Center for Evangelism, Miami, Florida. According to the Rev. Robert B. Hall, director of the Center, approximately 250 people attended some phase of the conference.
Fr. Hall, in his keynote address, pointed out that there are many types of Evangelism. He said that his organization has concentrated upon that area of evangelism which involves bringing people into a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. Fr. Hall feels that in recent years that particular aspect of evangelism has been neglected by the Church.
In referring to the recent Consultation on Evangelism called by the National Church, he said, "There we discussed many types of evangelism -- all of which are valid -- and we came to a consensus that the Church needs an all-encompassing approach to the subject."
The Glendale Conference concentrated upon the individual's relationship with God. Within that area of evangelism, twenty-one specific approaches were presented in brief talks by representatives of organizations having evangelical emphasis. Many of those representatives also led one-hour workshops.
The Rev. Canon Bryan Green, noted Anglican evangelist was the featured speaker on the first evening of the Conference. He also led a two-day workshop on "Anglicans and Evangelism. " Other two-day workshops were "Theory and Methods of Evangelism" led by Fr. Hall and " Evangelism Resources " led by Mr. Harry Griffith, director of the Bible Reading Fellowship.
A sampling of a FAITH ALIVE WEEKEND was presented the second night of the conference. Capt. Charles Howe acted as coordinator of that event. The conference concluded with a " Prayer and Praise " meeting the third evening.
The Glendale Conference was an outgrowth of a National Episcopal Conference on Evangelism which had been held in Memphis, Tennessee in October of last year. Another regional conference -- for the Northwest -- was held at St. Michael's Cathedral, Boise, Idaho, May 22-24. Three other conferences are scheduled for the fall; they are: Pittsburgh, Pa., Trinity Cathedral, October 30 - November 3; Winter Park, Fla., All Saints' Church, November 7-10; Houston, Texas, Christ Cathedral, November 28 - December 1.
