Diocesan Press Service. July 23, 1973 [73172]
NEW YORK, N.Y. -- A new publishing imprint for religious books – Crossroad Books -- was announced today by Werner Mark Linz, President of the Seabury Press, the official publishing house of the Episcopal Church.
Crossroad Books combines and continues the Seabury Press and Herder and Herder religious publishing programs, and offers an expanding list of ecumenical titles ranging from scholarly reference works through groundbreaking books in theology and spirituality to religious education, prayer books and hymnals, as well as several paperback lines.
Among the distinguished authors of the more than 500 Crossroad Books are Karl Rahner, Jacques Ellul, Bernard Lonergan, Gabriel Moran, Gregory Baum, Ladislaus Boros, Alan Paton, Reuel Howe, James Cone, and John Coburn.
Reid Isaac, Senior Editor, served for 10 years in the Department of Christian Education of the Executive Council of the Episcopal Church as Editor of the Junior High Program, Coordinator for Youth Work Planning, and Chief Explorer for the Joint Educational Development Team. Most recently, Mr. Isaac was on the staff of Bishop Paul Moore, Jr., of the Diocese of New York, as regional officer for Westchester and Rockland Counties.
Other major staff appointments to the Crossroad Books program include: Michael Leach, Associate Editor -- formerly on the staff of the Executive Council's Communication Department; and Roger Texier, the new Promotion Manager -- former Advertising and Special Projects Manager of Columbia University Press.
Robert Gilday continues as Editor. Prior to joining the Press in 1970, he was for six years Managing Editor of Publications in the Department of Christian Education of the Executive Council.
In addition to the diversified religious list under the Crossroad Books imprint, Seabury Press publishes its highly acclaimed Books for Young People and a growing general book program under the new imprint, Continuum Books.
Under new management since the beginning of 1973, the Seabury Press has not only expanded its editorial staff and its sales and promotion facilities, it has also reorganized and redirected the Press's business to project a profitable operating budget beginning with the current fiscal year. Financial reports for the first six months are, in fact, ahead of budget and Seabury Press has achieved a strong financial base.
The Seabury Press has been represented to the book trade by Harper and Row salesmen, but an additional marketing group of 20 representatives has recently been employed to provide the most extensive distribution for all Seabury Press publications.
