Cassette Edition of Old Testament Launched

ATLANTA, Ga. -- The Episcopal Radio-TV Foundation launched a new cassette edition of the Old Testament at a luncheon in Louisville during General Convention. Bishop John P. Craine of Indianapolis presented the first copy to Mrs. Amelia Brown Frazier, who commissioned the production, and announced that she would underwrite a new cassette edition of the New Testament.

Mrs. Frazier presented cassette editions of the Old Testament to Bishop George Daniel Browne of Liberia and to Bishop James Te Ming Pong of Taiwan.

Bishop Browne said that he would use the Old Testament cassettes in continuing education for his clergy. He said, "In my diocese we have 30 clergy and only five of us have theological degrees. Trinity Parish in New York is supplying me with a cassette player for each of my clergy. I will pass cassettes along to them and when we assemble for a clergy conference we will discuss those cassettes."

Bishop Pong said, "Back in Taiwan where we use the Chinese language, we can make good use of this gift in our English Bible classes. They are one of our most important agents of evangelism because many young Chinese are keen about learning the English language. "

The new production is unique because of its completeness. From Genesis to Malachi, it is the only cassette edition of the King James version that includes every chapter, every verse.

It is read by Alexander Scourby, distinguished actor and storyteller. Utilizing the 20th Century cassette medium, the Bible has been returned to its original medium of communication -- the storyteller. Without theatrics, Mr. Scourby's clear and simple reading gives life and humanity to the people of the Old Testament.

The new edition comes in two book-type albums of 24 cassettes each. Bound in a rich, red cover, with gold entitling, it will make a handsome addition to any library: personal, church, college, seminary, hospital. It will make a thoughtful gift for those who love the Bible.

Because Mrs. Frazier subsidized the production, it is possible for the Foundation to offer the complete two-volume set of 48 cassettes at a price slightly more than the cost of the blank cassettes in the retail market. It is also offered on a monthly subscription basis. Full information and sample cassette are available from the Episcopal Radio-TV Foundation, 15 Sixteenth Street, N. E., Atlanta, Ga. 30309.

The new cassette production of the New Testament is scheduled to start early in 1974.
