Conference Planned for Chaplains, Lay Readers

Diocesan Press Service. January 22, 1974 [74015]

TOKYO, Japan -- Canon-theologian William Johnson of the Cathedral of St. John the Divine in New York City, and a member of the faculty of Brandeis University, will act as conference leader for a meeting on "Rediscovering our Faith " for Armed Forces Chaplains and licensed lay readers from Hawaii, Guam, Okinawa, Korea, Thailand and Japan. The three-day meeting, to be held in Tokyo's Sono Hotel on February 15-18, will be limited to 25 persons. Bishop David Goto of the Nippon Seikokai and several of his priests will participate.

Arrangements have been made by Bishop Clarence Hobgood, Suffragan for Armed Forces for the Presiding Bishop of the Episcopal Church, who will be making a five-week visit to the six Asian areas represented.

Bishop Hobgood points out that many of the Chaplains and lay readers who plan to attend the meeting have been away from the United States for four years or more, and seek new theological insights as they carry on their ministry.

Emphasis will also be given to an examination of various new forms of experimental ministry which are under study or in practice with servicemen and their families.

During his visit, Bishop Hobgood will conduct a one-day retreat for Episcopalians in Thailand, and Canon Johnson will conduct a similar retreat in Korea, with the Rt. Rev. Paul Lee, Bishop of Seoul, participating.
