ATLANTA, Ga. -- A continuing education seminar, sponsored by the Episcopal Church-affiliated Absalom Jones Theological Institute (AJTI) here, has been announced by the Very Rev. Quinland R. Gordon, dean of the Institute.

The theme for the seminar is "The Priesthood -- An Authentic, Prophetic Teaching Ministry: Its Role and Function Today." Three topics will be explored in depth: The Historic Role of the Ministry; The Prophetic Voice and Function of the Priest as Minister to the Church and Community; and The Various, Authentic Forms of Ministry Today.

The seminar, which will be held February 20 - 23 at the AJTI, is designed to analyze the history of the Black ministry and the dilemmas facing the ministry today, according to Dean Gordon. The participants will consider possible new directions and relevant alternatives for the ministry today.

"For our seminarians," Dean Gordon said, "AJTI is an invaluable resource for providing the vital perspective of the Black religious and social heritage deemed requisite for an effective ministry. Adequate preparation for the ministry today requires not only. knowledge of the Episcopal Church's tradition, doctrine and liturgy, but also sensitivity and skill in dealing with crucial social and urban issues. "

Outstanding Churchmen who will provide leadership for this seminar will be Dr. J. Carleton Hayden, Howard University; Dr. Kelly Miller Smith, assistant dean, Vanderbilt Divinity School; the Rev. St. Julian A. Simpkins, canon, intercity work, Rochester, N.Y.; the Rev. Arthur B. Williams, department of program, Diocese of Michigan; the Rev. Franklin D. Turner, Coordinator for Black Ministries, Executive Council, New York City; and the Rev. Richard L. Tolliver, St. Cyprian's Church, Boston, Mass.

The seminar is open to both clergy and laity. Scholarship aid is available to those who desire to attend.

AJTI, the Episcopal affiliate in the Interdenominational Theological Center, is not a seminary, though it offers an accredited theological and educational curriculum which can be credited toward the degree requirements of the seminaries of the Church.

Information about the seminar can be secured from the Very Rev. Quinland R. Gordon, Absalom Jones Theological Institute, 671 Beckwith St., S.W., Atlanta, Ga. 30314.
