Conference on Church and Synagogue Libraries Planned

BOSTON, Mass. -- A national conference for all persons interested in church and synagogue libraries will be held in Boston, Mass., June 23-25, on the campus of Simmons College.

The purpose of the meeting is to offer practical guidance for volunteers organizing and operating such libraries.

The conference is sponsored by the Church and Synagogue Library Association, a national ecumenical organization fr med in 1967 to encourage and aid the development of improved library service for local congregations.

The theme of the conference is "The Freedom Trail through Books. " The chairman is Mr. Murray Tuchman, Librarian, Hebrew College, Brookline, Mass., and First Vice-President of CSLA. Working with Mr. Tuchman are Mrs. Sylvia Shulman, formerly president of the New England Jewish Library Association, in charge of local arrangements ; Mrs. Virginia Leach, Librarian, Episcopal Theological School, providing hospitality; Arthur Goldsmith, Vice-President of Jarrow Press, in charge of exhibits ; and Mrs. Elizabeth Halbrooks of The Horn Book, Inc., publicity.

The program will start with a General Session Sunday afternoon, June 23. A symposium will be held on "Why we have a national association and what are its duties and responsibilities ?"

The General Session will be followed by workshops: "Resources in the Community," "How to Answer Reference Questions," "Library Publicity," and " Planning Workshops."

The dinner speaker Sunday will be Robert C. Dvorak, Librarian, Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary, Hamilton, Mass. Mr. Dvorak will speak about the support a college theological library can give to local congregations. The President's Reception will follow.

More workshops are planned for Monday morning, June 24, including "Starting a Library, " "Book Selection, " "Book Care and Repair, " and "Children's Books. " The afternoon will be given over to literary and cultural tours of Boston and visits to church and synagogue libraries.

The dinner speaker on Monday will be Rabbi William G. Braude of Temple Beth El in Providence, R. I., who will speak on "Faces of God."

Tuesday morning, June 25, will be devoted to workshops on such subjects as "Beginning Cataloging," "Audiovisual Materials," and "How to Write a Book Review."

The luncheon speaker on Tuesday will be The Rev. Charles J. Ring, G.S.S., Superior of the Stagmatine Fathers in Waltham, Mass. Adjournment will follow.

Throughout the conference there will be exhibits of audiovisual materials, library supplies and books.
