WILMINGTON, Del. -- The Rt. Rev. William Henry Mead, 53, seventh Bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Delaware, died at his home here today, apparently of a heart attack.

Bishop Mead, a native of Detroit, was consecrated Bishop of Delaware on November 15, 1968. At the time of his election he was dean of Christ Church Cathedral in St. Louis, a post he had held since 1964. Prior to that he had served parishes in Bloomfield Hills, Mich., Alexandria, Va., St. Paul, Minn., and had been on the staff of the Parishfield Community, Brighton, Mich.

He attended the Cranbrook School, the University of Michigan, Lake Forest College, and the Virginia Theological Seminary, Alexandria, Va. The latter institution awarded him an honorary Doctor of Divinity degree in 1966.

Bishop Mead leaves his wife, the former Katherine Baldwin Lloyd, a son, William Lloyd, a daughter, Katherine, and three sisters.

Presiding Bishop John E. Hines issued the following statement on Bishop Mead's death: " Bishop Mead was one of the Episcopal Church's strongest ecclesiastical statesmen. He was always seeking to up-grade and renew church structures so that they could respond creatively to the Gospel for the sake of human beings. Sensitive to societal injustices and inequities, he spoke and fought for a fairer social order. His untimely death leaves a void in the ranks of this Church's leadership. "
