NEW YORK, N.Y. -- The Board for Theological Education (BTE) of the Epis- copal Church has announced that it has made three grants in support of theological education in Latin America.
A grant of $5,000 has been given to the Rev. Wilfrido Ramos, a member of the faculty of El Seminario Episcopal del Caribe, Carolina, P.R., to enable him to complete his doctoral studies at the General Theological Seminary, New York City. Upon the completion of his studies, Father Ramos will return to his teaching responsibilities at the seminary in Puerto Rico.
The BTE has made a grant of $5, 000 for the continuing education of four Ecuadorians who are preparing for ordination in Ecuador, in cooperation with the faculty of El Seminario Episcopal del Caribe. The grant will also assist in the theological education of five other men.
Together with Trinity Parish, New York City, the BTE has pledge support to the Comisi6n de Educati6n Teol6gica y Ministerio (CETYM), which serves a function similar to that of the BTE in Latin America. CETYM is attempting to assess the needs for ministry in the total vast area including Haiti, the Ninth Province dioceses, Mexico, Colombia, and Ecuador. CETYM has the responsibility of planning for theological education of both clergy and laity in the area.
In other action, the BTE made a second grant of $25,000 to the Philadelphia Divinity School which will merge this fall with the Episcopal Theological School at the Cambridge campus, to form the Episcopal Divinity School. In this action the Board indicated that it considers the uniting of the two seminaries as one of the most significant in the recent history of Episcopal theological education.
