Installation of the 23rd Presiding Bishop of the Episcopal Church

Diocesan Press Service. April 4, 1974 [74094]

The Rt. Rev. John Maury Allin, Bishop of Mississippi, will be installed as the 23rd Presiding Bishop of the Episcopal Church at the Cathedral of St. Peter and St. Paul (sometimes called the Washington National Cathedral), in Washington, D.C., on June 10 -11, 1974. A press release (#74095) is enclosed.

The installation celebration will begin with a Eucharist on Monday, June 10, at 6:00 p. m. and will continue with the formal inaugural ceremonies at 11:00 a. m. on Tuesday, June 11. Bishop Allin will not hold a press conference.

Space will be reserved for the press in the balcony of the North Transept which overlooks the Crossing where most of the service on June 11 will take place. In the seating of the press, special consideration will be given to reporters with immediate deadlines.

A press kit (including background information, a biography of Bishop Allin, the text of Bishop Allin's sermon, etc.) will be available for the press at the time of the installation. A photograph of Bishop Allin will be available at that time upon request.

The administrative offices of the communications director of the Cathedral (located near the North Transept) will be available for the use of the press, including telephones and typewriters.

Press photographers must be accredited and abide by the rules of the Cathedral. They must remain in designated places and no flash pictures are allowed. Because of the immensity of the Cathedral, "amateur" photography is discouraged. Sets of color slides and black/white prints will be available for purchase after the installation and may be ordered from Mr. James' office. Black and white glossy prints and a press release will be mailed to the Diocesan Press list as soon after the installation as possible (hopefully within a week).

Press credentials will be issued to accredited members of the various media. Press credentials for members of the Episcopal Communicators who have requested and received accreditation will be issued during their annual meeting on June 9-10. Others may pick up their credentials in the office of the communications director of the Cathedral. Requests for press accreditation (on the enclosed form) should be directed no later than May 24 to:
