Pledges by Dioceses to 1974 National Budget Almost Over The Top
Diocesan Press Service. April 4, 1974 [74096]
NEW YORK, N.Y. -- The 93 domestic dioceses of the Episcopal Church have come within $122,566 of the $11 million apportioned to them by the General Convention last fall for the 1974 general church program budget.
The dioceses have never in the history of the church pledged the full amount apportioned to them by the General Convention.
The $122,566 short-fall for 1974 represents a marked contrast with the short-fall of $2.5 million for the first year following the last meeting of the triennial General Convention in 1970.
Of the 93 domestic dioceses, 69 have accepted their assigned quotas, nine have over-pledged, and 15 have pledged less than the quota. In addition to its pledged quota, one diocese has promised a special gift of $40,000.
In 1971 only 42 dioceses accepted their full quota.
The over-pledges range from $16 to $86,223, while the under-pledges range from $1,602 to $49,077.
The total budget for the 1974 general church program is $13,625,732. The anticipated sources of income, in addition to the $11,008,381 apportioned to the U.S. dioceses, include: voluntary offering from overseas dioceses ($35,000); trust fund income ($1,700,000); special gifts, legacies, contributions, etc. ($384,351); short term investments ($361,000); income from trusts held by others ($25,000); and an unexpended budget balance from 1972 ($112,000).
Oscar C. Carr, Jr., vice-president for development, said, "The Church has never in its history met the General Church Program Budget passed in General Convention. This year we are extraordinarily close. It is my personal hope that the dioceses which have not met their quotas may be able to reconsider their pledges so that we can go over the top."
Lindley M. Franklin, Jr., treasurer, said, "We are all very pleased with the response of the Church, and feel very strongly that this was due to the Diocesan visitations.
