Paul Washington Elected to Council by Province III

ALEXANDRIA, Va. -- The Rev. Paul M. Washington, rector of the Church of the Advocate, Philadelphia, was elected to the Executive Council of the Episcopal Church as the representative of Province II, at its meeting here on March 26.

Mr. Washington, who won election over six other nominees, will succeed the Rt. Rev. Wilburn C. Campbell, who resigned the post in February.

Born in Charleston, S.C., in 1921, Mr. Washington received his education at Lincoln University in Pennsylvania and the Philadelphia Divinity School. The latter school awarded him an honorary D.D. degree in 1970.

Following a year as curate at the Church of the Crucifixion, Philadelphia, Mr. Washington was a missionary in Liberia, West Africa, from 1948 to 1954. Upon his to the U.S. in 1954, he became vicar at St. Cyprian's Mission, Philadelphia, and served there until he became rector of the Church of the Advocate in 1962.

He has been active in a prison ministry in Philadelphia, and has served on the Pennsylvania Committee of the U.S. Civil Rights Commission and the City of Philadelphia Commission on Human Relations.

Married to the former Christine Jackson of Philadelphia, they have four children.

Bishop William F. Creighton of Washington was elected president of the province for a three-year term, succeeding Bishop Robert F. Gibson who recently retired as Bishop of Virginia. The provincial synod adopted resolutions of appreciation for the service and leadership of Bishop Gibson and Bishop Campbell.

Province III includes the dioceses in the states of Delaware, Maryland, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and West Virginia.
