Peace Fellowship Starts Nationwide Campaign
Diocesan Press Service. May 3, 1974 [74139]
NEW YORK, N. Y. -- At its semi-annual meeting, the Executive Committee of the Episcopal Peace Fellowship formulated a program of peace actions for 1974-75. Three major priorities were selected:
1. AMNESTY. EPF will seek full 1976 General Convention endorsement of the 1973 house of Bishops resolution calling for a general amnesty. In between, EPF will sponsor educational activities throughout the Church, with emphasis on the Church's pastoral mission to resisters and veterans.
2. PEACE IN INDOCHINA. EPF will work to mobilize opposition within the Church to the continuing U.S. involvement in Vietnam and Cambodia. A special statement, "Indochina Peace Resolution," will be presented at diocesan conventions and other forums, calling for an end to the use of American tax money to support the repressive governments in South Vietnam and Cambodia. Also, EPF will encourage contributions to the Presiding Bishop's Fund for World Relief (earmarked for Indochina), but noting that reconstruction cannot truly happen until the destruction ends.
3. PEACE EDUCATION. EPF urges full implementation of the 1973 General Convention resolution calling for support and funding of diocesan peace education programs.
According to Jack Malinowski, EPF National. Program Coordinator, "We are moving forward after a rather difficult year for the peace movement. We are learning how to work and plan for a long range effort in the struggle for peace and justice in America. " Malinowski also noted, "The new EPF program stresses the unique role that the Church could and should play in building a more just and peaceful society."
EPF also announces the re-election of Theresa Gillett as National Chairwoman of the organization. Ms. Gillett was a deputy to the 1973 General Convention from the Diocese of Massachusetts and is active as a consultant for Christian education in the Boston area. Other officers elected include the Rev. Thomas Lee Hayes, New York, as Vice-Chairman; Mary Miller, Baltimore, as Treasurer, and the Rev. Fred Crysler, Philadelphia, as Secretary.
