Joint Commission on World Mission Holds First Meeting

TUXEDO PARK, N.Y. -- The first meeting of the Episcopal Church's Joint Commission on World Mission, following its establishment by the mandate of the General Convention in Louisville, Ky., in the fall of 1973, was held at Tuxedo Park, N.Y., May 14 - 17.

The Rev. John L. O 'Hear, Christ Church, Wilmington, Del., was elected chairman; Mrs. Fernando Aldana, Guatemala City, Guatemala, vice chairman; and the lion. John G. Martin, Columbia, S.C., secretary.

The Commission affirmed the report of the Overseas Review Committee (ORC), which it succeeds, and established two task forces to proceed with its assignment.

The General Convention adopted two resolutions on program directions in world mission, on recommendation of the ORC, and they are as follows:

" Resolved, That this General Convention endorse the principle that this Church will work in cooperation with each overseas jurisdiction, agency, and institution now a part of The Episcopal Church, toward its self-government, self-support, and self- propagation, in ways that enhance and strengthen mutuality in mission; and be it further

" Resolved, That the general policy of seeking new styles of missionary planning and new patterns for mission, affirmed in the Report of the Overseas Review Committee, he recommended as guidelines for the policy of this Church. "

The Commission voted unanimously to invite the Rev. Gerald McAllister, San Antonio, Tex., a member of the Executive Council and chairman of the Council's Program Group on Jurisdictional Relations, to sit with it as consultant/observer.

The members of the Joint Commission on World Mission are: The Rt. Rev. Edmund Browning, convenor; the Rt. Rev. George A. Browne, Liberia; the Rt. Rev. J. Antonio Ramos, Costa Rica; the Rev. Charles H. Eddy, Alaska; the Rev. John L. O 'Hear, Delaware; the Rev. Onell Soto, El Salvador; Mrs. Fernando Aldana, Guatemala; Mr. Armando Barboa, Northern Mexico; Mr. Richard Bowden, Atlanta; H. Isaac Del Real, M.D., Colombia; Mr. Hamilton Edwards, Southern Philippines; Miss Ana Mercedes Lago, Puerto Rico; Mr. John G. Martin, Upper South Carolina; Mr. Keith Milligan, Louisiana; and Mrs. G. Weldon Willis, New York. All members were present with the exception of Mr. Edwards.
