ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Six accredited theological seminaries of the Episcopal Church have been awarded grants from the Conant Fund for faculty salaries, according to action by the Board for Theological Education (BTE), at its meeting April 29-30.
The Conant Fund was established from the legacy under the will of the late William Shubael Conant in 1952. The will provided that income from the legacy should be used "for the improvement of theological education through the payment of salaries to selected teachers in the several theological seminaries" of the Episcopal Church.
The grants were made to the following seminaries:
* Church Divinity School of the Pacific, Berkeley, Calif. -- $5, 000 for each of three years to help underwrite the salary of a director of field education.
* Seminario Episcopal del Caribe, Carolina, Puerto Rico -- $7,000 for each of three years for an S. T. M. degree program in pastoral psychology and supervised clinical training in counseling.
* Episcopal Divinity School, Cambridge, Mass. -- $5,000 for each of three years for the appointment of a lecturer in Black Studies. Episcopal Divinity School is the seminary resulting from the merger of the Philadelphia Divinity School and the Episcopal Theological School, effective in the fall of 1974.
* Nashotah House, Nashotah, Wis. -- $6, 000 for each of three years for the establishment of a continuing education program for clergy and parishioners in the area.
* Virginia Theological Seminary, Alexandria, Va. -- $5,000 for each of three years for assistance in developing a Black Studies program through the use of adjunct professors.
* Episcopal Theological Seminary of the Southwest, Austin, Tex. -- $3,000 for one year for faculty salaries.
Each seminary will make an annual report to the BTE and to the other seminaries.
