Cuttington College Development Campaign Presented to Council

GREENWICH, Conn. -- Initial plans for launching a three-year, $3.1 million development campaign on behalf of Cuttington College, Suacoco, Liberia, were presented to the Executive Council here on February 18.
Founded in 1889 as part of the Episcopal Church's missionary effort in Liberia, Cuttington is seeking to raise $3.1 million to increase its endowment; to construct classroom buildings and housing for faculty and students; to purchase farm equipment; and to renovate and repair several buildings.
The campaign plans were unveiled by Dr. Oscar C. Carr, executive for development on the staff, and two representatives of Marts and Lundy, Inc., the fund-raising firm.
Tozier Brown, vice president of Marts and Lundy, said that the campaign is launched because of an "urgent" but not "desperate" need, "an urgency born of strength not weakness. "
He said that the success of the campaign depends largely on "strong leadership," with the selection of the national chairman "the most crucial matter to be handled in the entire campaign. "
He said that since Cuttington College has no board of trustees in the U.S., the members of the Executive Council are considered the ones to "take the place of a governing board in America for Cuttington College."
Mr. Brown said that a sufficient number of prospects to give on a set scale is required. He said the plan is not to get 3,000 donors to give $1,000 each. One-half the money should be expected from seven gifts, he added. One hundred donors, mostly individuals rather than corporations and foundations, will be expected to contribute $2.5 million of the $3.1 million goal.
John I. Carlson, executive vice president and secretary of Marts and Lundy, said that the members of the Executive Council must be committed to the campaign and "work on it. "
Dr. Carr reported that the chairman of the campaign in Liberia will be Dr. William Tolbert, President of the Republic of Liberia.
In June, 1974, the Council advanced this development effort $50,000 from the 1974 reserve funds to be repaid from the first funds collected in the $3. 1 million campaign. A similar loan has been approved for 1975.
Dr. Carr said that a 20-minute film will soon be ready for use by dioceses and parishes in connection with the campaign.
The Council approved a resolution to "adopt the proposal to proceed with the $3.1 million capital funds drive for Cuttington College," and a second resolution to authorize "the Executive Council, the sponsoring agency for this endeavor," to "contract with the firm of Marts & Lundy, Inc. to assist the Development Officer in the implementation of this goal.
