WASHINGTON, D.C. -- In response to the Presiding Bishop's appeal for help to alleviate world hunger through contributions to his Fund for World Relief, the children of St. Mark's Parish, Washington, D.C., with help from the church's Social Action Board, held a bake sale. Their earnings, $47.82, was accompanied by an outsized letter. When Bishop Allin heard of the children's efforts, he was pleased to meet with the children personally while visiting the area. There, young Alice Lawrenz read the letter to him on behalf of the 11 "friends of St. Mark's."

"Dear Bishop Allin: We are having a Bake Sale today to raise money for poor, hungry people like people who have zero dollars and zero cents.

"For three weeks some of St. Mark's kids have been making dough, making sugar cookies and cutting out gingerbread cookies, and cooking them, and NOT eating them. Well, the cooks each ate one, but we saved the rest.

"Today, January 26, 1975, we will march around the church with a banner we made and our cookies. Each person will be carrying a small tray of cookies. We will sell them to hungry people to raise money for other hungry people.

"From your friends at St. Mark's Church, Washington, D.C."

It was signed by: Kristina Bivins, Raymond Kalas, Gretchen M.S., Justine Kalas, Kate, Anne Stanton, Elizabeth Craig, Alice Lawrenz, Gregor Addison Kalas, Alice Lawrenz, and David B.

Afterward, the children shared their cookies with Bishop Allin who listened intently to the cookie recipe.
