Canon Anderson Named to Development, Stewardship Staff

NEW YORK, N.Y. -- The Rev. Canon Richard J. Anderson, Administrative Assistant to the Bishop of the Diocese of New York since 1971, has been named by the Rt. Rev. John M. Allin, Presiding Bishop of the Episcopal Church, as Associate for Development and Stewardship of the Executive Council.

In this position he will assist Dr. Oscar C. Carr, Jr., Executive for Development/Stewardship, in creating and initiating leadership in releasing and developing the human and financial resources of the Church in order to strengthen the Church's mission.

Born in Iowa City, Iowa, in 1934, Canon Anderson received his A. B. degree from San Diego State College, and his B.D. degree from Church Divinity School of the Pacific, Berkeley, Calif., in 1961. He received his S.T.M. degree in 1969 from the Dubuque Theological Seminary. He was ordained a priest in 1961.

In the Diocese of Iowa Canon Anderson was vicar of St. Paul's Church, Durant, 1961-65, and was a member of the Executive Council from 1965 to 1969.

He served as rector of St. John's Church, Dubuque, Ia., 1965-69, and was rector of Grace Church, Buffalo, N.Y., from 1969 until he joined the diocesan staff in 1971.

Canon Anderson has been an instructor in Church history at Canisius College, Buffalo, since 1970.

In the Diocese of Western New York he has edited CHURCHFACTS, the diocesan publication, since 1969. At the 1973 General Convention of the Episcopal Church, Louisville, Ky., he was editor of THE GENERAL CONVENTION DAILY.

He serves as a member of the national Executive Council's Communication Committee, a member of the Board of Trustees of THE EPISCOPALIAN, editor of the Professional Supplement in THE EPISCOPALIAN, and is a member of the board of directors of the Episcopal Communicators.

In 1959 he married Sandra Dee Keyes and they have three children.
