PHILADELPHIA, Pa. -- A letter from the Rt. Rev. John M. Allin, Presiding Bishop of the Episcopal Church, to senior wardens and vestries of parishes, urging subscription support for THE EPISCOPALIAN, a national tabloid, has brought responses from 1,113 parishes.
In a letter early this year, Bishop Allin invited vestries to provide a one-year subscription to the national publication for every member of the vestry and for every parish leader. A special rate was offered for subscriptions submitted by Easter 1975.
The 1,113 responses have brought in 18,149 new subscriptions, which makes the May 1975 circulation more than 185,000 -- an increase of about 85,000 since early last fall.
In his letter to wardens and vestries, Bishop Allin said that it is his "hope and dream" that "information about the Church, its activities on a national and international level, its continuing programs, and even its problems" can reach all of the more than 700,000 families in the Episcopal Church by the 1979 General Convention.
Bishop Allin indicated that he is "elated" at the most recent report on the responses to his invitation for parish leaders to subscribe to THE EPISCOPALIAN, the officially sponsored Church publication of the Episcopal Church.
Florida and New Jersey are the most recent additions to the list of dioceses which publish their news inserted in THE EPISCOPALIAN, with several other dioceses and at least one national independent tabloid considering the plan. Dioceses now publishing through the national paper are Arizona, Central Pennsylvania, Iowa, Kentucky, Nevada, Northern Michigan, Eastern Oregon, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, and Southwest Florida, with Florida and New Jersey joining in the fall.
