BOSTON, Mass. -- Representatives of St. Cyprian's Episcopal Church in Boston, Mass., recently gave the Rt. Rev. John M. Allin, Presiding Bishop of the Episcopal Church, a check for $2,527.50 for world hunger through the Presiding Bishop's Fund for World Relief.
The congregation designated the money for Africare to purchase two irrigation pumps "to alleviate the suffering of drought victims in the West African country of Niger."
St. Cyprian's Church set aside the weekend of March 8-9 as "Save the Children Weekend," one of their Lenten Outreach projects, to raise money for the pumps.
Parishioners were given "love boxes," provided by the Presiding Bishop's Fund, and they were asked to go without a meal each week until they had deposited at least $10 in the boxes.
A special worship service was held at St. Cyprian's on March 9, with Dick Gregory the comedian as the speaker. The musical setting of the mass was the Missa Lubba, which was written for Christians in the Congo. The musical accompaniment was gourds and conga drums. The litany as well as the dress of the ministers reflected an African motif.
The offering for world hunger at that service was $2,300. The church was filled to capacity with a large congregation watching the service on closed circuit television in the parish hall.
Additional funds were provided by a benefit basketball game, sponsored by the youth of the church, between the Tri-Parish Basketball Team and some present and former members of the New England Patriots. The Tri-Parish team is composed of young men from the parishes of St. Augustine/St. Martin's, St. Cyprian's, and St. John's/St. James'.
The special project at St. Cyprian's was in response to an Epiphanytide appeal by Presiding Bishop Allin for contributions to the Presiding Bishop's Fund for World Relief, designated for world hunger.
Africare is an agency in West Africa which is attempting to provide relief for the drought-ravaged countries in the Sahelian midlands of Africa. Suffragan Bishop John T. Walker of Washington is vice chairperson of Africare's board.
