Voorhees College Observes Anniversaries

DENMARK, S.C. -- On April 5, Voorhees College observed the 78th anniversary of its founding and the 50th anniversary of its affiliation with the Episcopal Church.
The address was given by the Rt. Rev. Richard B. Martin, executive for ministries of the Executive Council staff. The honorary degree of Doctor of Humane Letters was conferred on Bishop Martin during the convocation.
Greetings were brought by the Hon. W. Brantley Harvey, Jr., lieutenant governor of South Carolina; the Hon. Walter E. Brooker, mayor of Denmark; Bishop Gray Temple of South Carolina; Bishop George M. Alexander of Upper South Carolina; and Dr. Oscar C. Carr, Jr., executive for development of the Executive Council staff, representing Presiding Bishop John M. Allin.
Ecclesiastical awards were presented by the college to the national Protestant Episcopal Church and the Dioceses of South Carolina and Upper South Carolina.
Awards of appreciation were presented to Dr. Carr; Dr. Arthur Ben Chitty, president of the Association of Episcopal Colleges; Dr. Lindley M. Franklin, Jr., treasurer of the Executive Council; the Rev. Joseph N. Green, Norfolk, Va., president of the Union of Black Episcopalians; Dr. Earl H. McClenney, Sr., former president of Voorhees College and of St. Paul's College, and former president of the Association of Episcopal Colleges; Dr. John F. Potts, Sr., president emeritus of Voorhees ; the Rev. Franklin D. Turner, executive coordinator for black ministries of the Executive Council staff ; and the Rt. Rev. Milton L. Wood, Jr., executive for administration of the Executive Council staff.
Voorhees was founded in 1897 by Elizabeth Evelyn Wright, a graduate of Tuskegee Institute. Property for the school was donated by Mr. Ralph Voorhees of Clinton, N. J., in 1901. Meeting serious financial difficulties, the college in 1925 became an institution of the Episcopal Dioceses of South Carolina and Upper South Carolina and one of the American Church Institute colleges.
