ELY, Nev. -- A police escort with sirens going and red lights flashing greeted Presiding Bishop John M. Allin and accompanied him from the airport into town when he arrived in Ely, Nevada, for the 1975 diocesan convention on April 11.

During the course of his stay in Ely the Presiding Bishop also received an award of a sterling silver medallion, struck to commemorate the centennial of White Pine County, Nevada, in 1969. The medallion was the last remaining of 100 which had originally been made.

According to Betty Whitehurst, manager of the White Pine County Chamber of Commerce, the community had been looking for a legal owner for the final medallion, and the stipulation was that it had to be for someone who made history in White Pine County. Her committee, she said, had determined that Bishop Allin had.

At the same time, the Rev. Al Rollins, Executive Council staff, and the Rt. Rev. Wesley Frensdorff, bishop of Nevada, were each given bronze centennial medallions.

Ely is a community of 4, 176 people located in the isolated high desert of eastern Nevada's mining and ranch country. It is 285 miles from Las Vegas and 320 miles from Reno. The diocese's convention was the first official event to be held in the town's new convention center.

Bishop Allin was the speaker at the convention's opening service, had a question and answer session with convention delegates and visitors, and was celebrant of the convention Eucharist.
