DENVER, Colo. -- "The food and hunger crisis is not another passing fad or another item added to our crowded agenda," the 41-member Executive Council of the Episcopal Church was told here at its quarterly meeting May 14-15.
"It has the Biblical imperative," the Rev. Richard E. Hayes, deputy to the Bishop of Wyoming for program, told the members of Council. "It is a central part of one world mission. Through it God is working his purpose out."
Reporting for the Council's Ad Hoc Inter-Provincial Team on World Hunger, Mr. Hayes said that the food and hunger crisis "is both a sign of God's judgment and of His promise."
In his progress report, Mr. Hayes mentioned the two training sessions held in March for provincial enablers who in turn will train diocesan enablers.
A joint report by the team, the board of the Presiding Bishop's Fund for World Relief, and the Council's committee on Social Ministry and Concerns, will be presented to the Council in September.
Mr. Hayes said that a part of the "important ongoing task will be to enable the churches in the United States to listen to brother and sister Christians in the Third World nations as they define their realities and understandings of social justice and development. "
He said that the team is not attempting "to sell 'from on high' one uniform program. " Rather, he said, "we anticipate a world and a church that accepts differences, encourages pluralism and local initiative and celebrates diversity in the Spirit."
