Lindley M. Franklin Retires as Treasurer of Council

DENVER, Colo. -- Dr. Lindley M. Franklin, Jr., submitted his resignation as treasurer of the Episcopal Church's Executive Council and of its Domestic and Foreign Missionary Society at the May 14-15 meeting of the Council here. He is retiring after 29 years of service with the national finance department.
Dr. Franklin was assistant treasurer of the Society and Council from 1946 until his election as treasurer in 1958.
He will be succeeded on August 1 by Mr. Matthew Costigan who has been assistant treasurer since 1966, and who was assistant controller and then controller for 11 years prior to that.
A graduate of Williams College, Dr. Franklin had 10 years of experience in banking before coming to the Council. He served with distinction in the U.S. Army in Europe during World War II.
Dr. Franklin is a nephew of Dr. Lewis B. Franklin, a predecessor in the office of treasurer of the Council.
In 1963 he was awarded an honorary Doctor of Law and Letters degree by St. Augustine's College, Raleigh, N.C.
Dr. Franklin serves as treasurer and board member of a great variety of church agencies.
He was married to the former Eleanor W. Wooley, deceased, and is the father of three daughters. He has since married Helen McConaughy.
Dr. and Mrs. Franklin were honored by the Council in Denver at a dinner when tributes were paid by Presiding Bishop John M. Allin and by Mr. Walker Taylor, Wilmington, N.C., chairman of the Council's finance committee. Dr. Franklin responded by recounting some of his experiences during his 29 years with the Council, spanning the administrations of five presiding bishops.
The Council gave him an inscribed silver punch bowl in appreciation for his many years of faithful service.
