Sponsors for Refugees Needed
Diocesan Press Service. June 23, 1975 [75232]
NEW YORK, N.Y. -- Presiding Bishop John M. Allin of the Episcopal Church has called on the diocesan bishops of the church to help find sponsors for "the large numbers of refugees from Vietnam and Cambodia," which, he said, "present the churches with a serious challenge at a time identified as difficult in American life."
Bishop Allin pointed out to the bishops that the Episcopal Church has "the opportunity and responsibility to help many of these newcomers to our country find new lives in our midst. "
The Office of Refugee Resettlement of the Presiding Bishop's Fund for World Relief is looking for sponsors of the refugees. The Presiding Bishop's Fund works through the National Council of Churches' Church World Service, which has pledged to find sponsors for at least 2,000 family units, Bishop Allin said.
"Church World Service," he said, "requires that refugees be sponsored by congregations in order to assure adequate moral and material support for the refugees as they move out into our communities."
Anyone interested in being a sponsor should contact Mrs. Isis Brown, Office of Refugee Resettlement, Episcopal Church Center, 815 Second Avenue, New York, N.Y. 10017, Telephone: 212/867-8400, ext. 287.
