1976 CSMO Will Help Diocese of Southern Philippines

NEW YORK, N.Y. -- At the recommendation of the Coalition of Overseas Bishops and by action of the Executive Council of the Episcopal Church, the 1976 Church School Missionary Offering (CSMO) will be used to support an education program in the Missionary Diocese of the Southern Philippines.

The Southern Diocese of the church in the Philippines, under the leadership of Bishop Constancio Manguramas, covers the island of Mindanao, at the bottom of the Philippine archipelago, 600 miles south of Manila. Mindanao is populated by several primitive tribes who until recently have had little contact with Western culture.

Large migrations into Mindanao from the north for the development of the island's rich forests and agricultural areas have created tensions between the Tirurays, Moros and other tribes, and the northern immigrants. The tribes are losing their best land to developers, and the poorly educated local youth are finding it difficult to compete for jobs in the new economy.

The Southern Diocese educational program, with help from CSMO, will enlist and train unemployed youth to work in the hill country and in the urban barrios teaching Christian education, nutrition, family planning, hygiene and improved agricultural methods. The Church School Missionary Offering will also help expand a mobile clinic, which presently has one doctor, one nurse and one midwife to serve 30,000 Tirurays.

Order forms for the 1976 CSMO materials have been mailed to all parishes from the Church Center. Available this year are a poster, study guide for church school teachers, children's work sheet, adult folder and offering box. The materials are undated and may be used at any time through the fall of 1976.
