Bicentennial Hymn Contest Announced

Diocesan Press Service. October 31, 1975 [75379]

NEW YORK, N.Y. -- The Episcopal Church's Committee on the Observance of the Bicentennial of the Nation has announced a contest for a new hymn on one of the committee's themes.

Prizes will be awarded to author and composer of an original work suitable for general use and especially for use on national holidays. The themes on which the new hymn should be based are: Penitence for our national sins and failures; Celebration of our national achievements; and Thanksgiving for God's redemption and reaffirmation of our duties as individuals and Americans.

First prize will be $250 each for text and for music, with a second prize of $100 for each. An award of merit will go to the sponsoring parish of each prize hymn.

Prize winning hymns will be published by the Church Hymnal Corporation and will be considered for inclusion in a future revision of the 1940 Hymnal.

All manuscripts should be typewritten and two copies should be submitted. Entries must be submitted under parish sponsorship, not more than three entries per parish. Judges reserve the right to award no prize if no entry is judged suitable, and the decision of the judges is final.

The deadline for submitting entries is December 31, 1975. Winners will be announced in the May issue of the Bicentennial Newsletter. Entries should be mailed to: Bicentennial Hymn Contest, c/o The Rev. Page S. Bigelow, Episcopal Church Center, 815 Second Avenue, New York, N.Y. 10017 U.S.A.
