SAN ANTONIO, Tex. -- The Episcopal Diocese of West Texas and the national Presiding Bishop's Fund for World Relief have joined in supporting a project designed to meet urgent needs of their neighbors to the south in Honduras.
The Diocese of Texas' central hunger committee, "Hope for the Hungry," sent $6,000 through the Brother's Brother Foundation for the drilling of a water well on the grounds of the Martinez Hospital in San Pedro Sula, Honduras. Half the money came directly from congregations in the Diocese of West Texas in undesignated funds. The remaining $3,000 came from the Presiding Bishop's Fund in response to the committee's request for support in this area.
The water well will enable the people in Honduras to use powdered milk, soups, and other basic food items.
Leader in the diocese's efforts on behalf of Honduras is a member of the "Hope for the Hungry" committee, Robert M. Ayres, Jr., who is also a trustee of the Brother's Brother Foundation, a volunteer organization working ecumenically in the field of Honduras, in the U.S., and around the world in its fund raising. Mr. Ayres, an investment banker, is a member of Christ Church, San Antonio, Tex.
A spokesman for the Diocese of West Texas said, " 'Hope for the Hungry' is indeed grateful that the Diocese of West Texas was on the receiving end of monetary support from the national Church and equally excited about the prospect of beginning a new and intimate relationship with her as they continue to wage war on hunger.
