Coalition 14 Executive Committee Meets
Diocesan Press Service. November 24, 1975 [75408]
DENVER, Colo. -- The Executive Committee of Coalition-14 (C-14) met November 12-13 in Denver, under chairmanship of Bishop William Davidson of Western Kansas. Others present were: Bishop Walter Jones of South Dakota, Bishop George Masuda of North Dakota, the Rev. Canon Victor Richer of Montana, the Rev. Robert Herlocker of Eastern Oregon, the Rev. Canon Hunter Morris of Arizona, Mr. Paul Chalk of Nevada, and Mr. Bob Gordon of Utah. Staff persons from New York included: the Rev. Al Rollins, Mr. Matthew Costigan, and Mr. Louis Gill. This group represents the voluntary association of dioceses committed to work with and support each other in their stewardship of mission resources.
Major attention was given to word from Executive Council finance committee that proposed budget allocation for 1976 would fall some $146,000 short of the C-14 grant request of $1,578,200 (including Alaska) to provide support for all of the member jurisdictions except Rio Grande, the only diocese making no request in 1976. Notices of this reduction will be sent to members with recommendation for cuts looking towards final adjustments at the C-14 Annual Meeting to be held at Phoenix, Ariz., January 15-18, 1976.
The Executive Committee also performed its audit function in regard to 1977 budgets of members and made plans for presentation of grant requests for 1977, as well as an appeal for additional support in 1976, to Executive Council.
Alaska, having voted at its recent diocesan convention to join, was given formal recognition although this status had been approved at the 1975 Annual Meeting subject to assurances that C-14 criteria would be met. General Church support for Alaska will now be transferred to the support item for C-14 grant requests. Letters of greeting and interest were received from the Navajo Episcopal Council, and from the National Committee on Indian Work.
The Committee reviewed plans of its Communication group headed by Bishop Trelease of Rio Grande for C-14 Sunday to be observed in all member dioceses on January 18, 1976, or on some other nearby date. Materials are being distributed regarding the observance. A slide, film, or filmstrip show depicting aspects of the Church's work throughout C-14 is being prepared by the communications group.
Other matters considered by the Executive Committee included: C-14 support of the Income Development Plan, Continuing Education of clergy, clergy support (including compensation, stewardship, accountability and deployment), and other matters related to preparation for the Annual Meeting.
Visitors at the Executive Committee meeting included: The Very Rev. Robert Browne, Dean of St. Michael's Cathedral, Boise, Idaho, who presented a report on C-14's involvement in a pilot project on Evangelism for Easter to Pentecost, 1976; and the Very Rev. Gordon Charlton, Dean of the Episcopal Seminary of the Southwest, Austin, Texas, who was invited by the Executive Committee to discuss matters concerning theological education and ministry of both clergy and laity.
The Executive Committee gave approval to the Evangelism project which will be further discussed at the Annual Meeting as plans to implement it in each diocese are considered.
