Bishop-elect Coburn Writes Lenten Book
Diocesan Press Service. November 24, 1975 [75416]
NEW YORK, N.Y. -- The author of the classic, A Life to Live, A Way to Pray, the Rev. Dr. John B. Coburn, has written The Seabury Lenten Book for 1976.
THE HOPE OF GLORY: Exploring the Mystery of Christ In You, encourages readers to identify the presence of an affirming God in the world of nature and within themselves and discover the glory in all human experiences from life to death to new life.
THE HOPE OF GLORY begins with an analysis of Ingmar Bergman's "Scenes from a Marriage," which demonstrates the failure of secularism to answer the questions of life. Dr. Coburn then interprets the message in such popular phenomena as "Godspell" and " Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance. "
The center section is an interior drama in seven acts picturing the encounters of modern man with Christ on the Cross, a portrayal of life, death, and resurrection in keeping with the deepest meaning of the Lenten Season.
Before being named Bishop of Massachusetts, Dr. Coburn was rector of St. James' Church in New York City and dean of the Episcopal Divinity School in Cambridge, Mass. He is currently president of the House of Deputies of the Episcopal Church. His consecration as Bishop of Massachusetts will take place after his term as president of the House of Deputies expires in the fall of 1976. He serves on the board of trustees of Princeton University and Union Theological Seminary in New York.
THE HOPE OF GLORY will be published on Ash Wednesday, March 3, 1976. The book, however, will be available after the middle of January at $7.95 (cloth) and $3.95 (paper) from The Seabury Bookstore or other related book stores.
