Travel on South Africa Airways Banned
Diocesan Press Service. April 22, 1969 [76-22]
NEW YORK, N.Y. -- The Episcopal Church has formally banned travel by its Executive Council staff on South Africa Airways, which inaugurated service in February between New York City and Johannesburg.
The ban includes all personnel of the Executive Council, including appointed missionaries.
In a letter to its travel agent, Travel Arrangements, Inc., of New York City, the Church cited its "unqualified opposition to the practice of apartheid in Southern Africa" and its support of sanctions against the governments of the Republic of South Africa and Rhodesia for their apartheid policies.
The letter signed by Warren H. Turner, Jr., vice president of the Executive Council, said: '"It is my responsibility to notify you formally that the Executive Council is not prepared to honor bills for transportation of its personnel via South Africa Airways."
It said that transportation for Executive Council personnel to South Africa would utilize alternate routing in order to comply with the ruling.
