Episcopal News Service. February 11, 1976 [76038]
DATE: February 11, 1976
TO: The Press (Diocesan, Religious, Secular)
FROM: Walter H. Boyd, Press Officer
SUBJECT: Registration & Accreditation for Press at 1976 General Convention
The 1976 General Convention of the Episcopal Church will be held in Minneapolis/St. Paul, Minnesota, September 11-23, 1976. The opening service is scheduled for Saturday, September 11, at 4:00 p.m., in the St. Paul Civic Center. Thereafter, the sessions of the Convention will be held in the Auditorium & Convention Hall in downtown Minneapolis.
Press Room facilities will be available for accredited members of the church and secular press. Included in the work space will be typewriters, telephones, resource material and persons, Telex and Telecopier service (for collect outgoing copy to publishing offices). Working releases will be prepared for the press by a group of communicators under the direction of Canon Howard Freeman, San Francisco, Calif. A daily tabloid, The Convention Daily, will be edited by the Rev. James M. Coram, High Point, N.C.
A block of rooms has been set aside for the press at the RADISSON HOTEL (# 13 on the enclosed hotel rate sheet), in downtown Minneapolis. There are 150 rooms set aside and reservations will be accepted on a 'first come, first served' basis. It is suggested that hotel reservations be made, even though you are not absolutely certain you will attend the Convention. Hotel reservations may be canceled if your plans change. All requests for hotel reservations must be made on the enclosed red/white/blue form and not directly with the hotel/motel. Please note important instructions for requesting room reservations on page 2 of this memorandum!
Please use the enclosed Press Accreditation request form (blue) to apply for press credentials for covering the General Convention. We reserve the right to limit the number of persons for press accreditation from any one publication because of the limited space in the press room and at the press tables in the two Houses. Actual registration will take place in Minneapolis and badges will be distributed at that time. An information kit will be available for the press at that time.
Additional request forms for room reservations and press accreditation may be secured from me upon request. Housing and press accreditation requests must be made on the appropriate forms. A separate accreditation form is required for each person desiring credentials.
General Convention documents will be made available to the press both in advance of and during the meeting of the Convention. A copy of the Executive Council Report and Proposal and the Blue Book (reports and resolutions of committees, commissions, agencies, etc.) are among the documents which will be sent to each accredited publication. Non-Episcopal publications may request a copy of the Draft Proposed Book of Common Prayer from my office. Because of our financial limitations, we are asking Episcopal Church publications to secure their own @ $3.50 from the the Church Hymnal Corp., 800 Second Ave., New York, N.Y. 10017.
Photographs of the Minneapolis/St. Paul meeting sites will be mailed soon to the Diocesan Press Service list. Photographs are available to non-Episcopal and secular publications upon request at my office.
There is no registration fee for the press. (Persons who attend in other capacities, such as deputy or bishop, pay the regular registration fee if accredited as press also.)
