McNamee Appointed Youth, College Work Coordinator

NEW YORK, N.Y. -- The Rev. James J. McNamee has been appointed by the Rt. Rev. John M. Allin, Presiding Bishop of the Episcopal Church, to be Coordinator of Youth and College Work on the Episcopal Church Center staff, effective February 1.

In his new post, Mr. McNamee will be primarily responsible for ministry in higher education, while Ms. Elizabeth Crawford works with the youth program.

At the time of his appointment he was director of the Ministry in Higher Education in the Diocese of Maryland, and president of the Ecumenical Campus Ministry.

Born in Baltimore, Md., in 1935, Mr. McNamee studied at the University of Paris, France, and received his B.A. in 1957 and his M.A. in 1960 from Johns Hopkins University. As a Fullbright Scholar, he studied at the University of Liege, Belgium, in 1960-61.

He received his S.T.B. degree from General Theological Seminary, New York City, in 1964, and was ordained a priest in 1965. Following two years as curate at St. Timothy's Episcopal Church, Catonsville, Md., he served as canon at Holy Trinity Pro-Cathedral in Paris, France, from 1966 to 1970, at which time he joined the diocesan staff in Maryland. He was visiting professor of philosophy at Peabody Conservatory, Baltimore, 1971-1972.

In 1971 he organized the Ecumenical Campus Ministry, which helped serve the campus chaplaincy needs in the Baltimore area. He has also had experience in crisis ministry and counseling of youth in the Diocese of Maryland.
