Ministry to Aging Conference Planned

New York, N.Y. -- The first conference for diocesan designees and other interested persons working with and for the aging on the local level with the support services of the Episcopal Society for Ministry to the Aging (ESMA) will be held April 26-28 at Trinity Church Parish in New York City.

The keynote address at the invitational conference will be given by the Rev. Dr. Herbert C. Lazenby, executive director of Episcopal Community Services, San Diego, Calif., who will speak on "Aging in the Future."

Workshops are planned for the following areas: parish ministries: model programs in congregations; pastoral care: understanding the older person and those with special needs; community services: outreach to the total community to foster independence; housing: types, programs, and financing; retirement planning: subjective and attitudinal preparation.

There will also be a discussion of government and voluntary resources, and a film, "The Third Age: The New Generation," will be shown. Bishop Richard B. Martin, Executive for Ministries at the Episcopal Church Center, will celebrate at a closing Eucharist.

The conference is made possible through a $10,000 grant to ESMA by the national United Thank Offering.

Sterling, director of Cathedral Towers, Jacksonville, Fla.; Mr. Woodrow W. Carter, officer for social welfare at the Episcopal Church Center, New York City; Mrs. Phoebe Bailey, eastern regional coordinator, Action for Independent Maturity; Miss Dorothy Demby, specialist in aging, American Federation for the Blind; Mrs. Fannie Jeffrey, retiree and formerly program counselor, Ministry to the Aging, Diocese of Washington; Mr. Donald Mulcahy, director of membership services, American Association of Homes for the Aged; Ms. Joyce Kirschner, director of area services, office of aging, City of New York; Mrs. Lydia Hollands, chairman of Senior Churchmen Task Group, Diocese of Central Florida; Mrs. Ethel G. Libby, director of Ministry to Older Persons, Trinity Episcopal Church, Wilmington, Del.; Mrs. Lorraine D. Chiaventone, executive secretary, Episcopal Society for Ministry to the Aging; Mrs. Nancy B. McGarrigle, manager of Finlay House, Columbia, S.C.; and the Rev. James W. Leech, diocesan designee of the Diocese of Rhode Island.
