GREENWICH, Conn. -- The Planning and Arrangements Committee of the Episcopal Church's General Convention has held its first meeting to prepare for the 1979 meeting of Convention and to set plans in motion for matters from space allocation to worship.
The Convention's Executive Secretary, the Rev. James R. Gundrum, reported on the Feb. 3-4 Denver, Colo., meeting to the February meeting of the Executive Council at Seabury House here. The Convention -- designated the Colorado Convention -- will meet in Denver Sept. 8-20, 1979.
Members toured the Convention meeting site and made tentative recommendations about the use of space at the Denver Convention Complex. The Convention manager's office was asked to review these and return to the next committee meeting with a fuller plan.
Bishop William C. Frey of Colorado met with the committee to discuss the role of the diocese in the Convention and its relationship to the committee. The group arrived at a clear definition of roles and responsibilities prior to and during the 1979 Convention, Fr. Gundrum said.
The committee agreed to expand the operation of the Common Ground and the Talk-it-out/Chek-it-out operation and to eliminate the Gathering Place.
Registration fees -- which help underwrite the cost of the Convention meeting -- were set by the committee at $20 for bishops, deputies, alternates, women's Triennial delegates, Executive Council members and staff, and special diocesan representatives, and at $10 for registrants or visitors. The fee for exhibit space was set at $395 each.
Bishop Scott Field Bailey of West Texas, who is also secretary of the House of Bishops, was elected chairman of the 1979 Planning and Arrangements Committee.
Presiding Bishop John M. Allin asked the Very Rev. David B. Collins, Dean of the Cathedral of St. Philip, Atlanta, and vice president of the House of Deputies, to assist him in planning Convention worship.
