New York, N.Y. -- The Rev. Dr. Alan W. Jones, chairman of the steering committee of the new Church's Teaching Series of the Episcopal Church, has announced that Ruth Gordon Cheney has accepted the position of General Editor of the series.

Her responsibilities will include reviewing all the final manuscripts, coordinating approach, style and overall integrity of the series, and making recommendations to the steering committee.

Mrs. Cheney, at present Executive for Education on the Executive Council staff, coordinates the Episcopal Church's programs of religious education, evangelism, lay ministry, and youth and college ministries. By September of this year she plans to retire from the Council staff.

Mrs. Cheney was appointed Executive for Program (now Education) by Presiding Bishop John M. Allin in June, 1974. She has been a member of the Council staff since 1963 as consultant and resource specialist in youth ministry and religious education, assisting diocesan, parish, and regional leaders to develop and evaluate their ministries with young people 12-18 years of age.

In 1974 Mrs. Cheney completed a study for the Episcopal Church Foundation on the relationship of young people to the Episcopal Church. Her publications include Transition -- An Overview of 12-14 Year Olds in the Church; High Wall? Low Wall? No Wall; and many articles for church periodicals.

The working titles of the proposed seven volumes of the new Church's Teaching Series are: Christian Believing; The Bible for Today's Church; The Church in History; Christian Understanding: Affirming the Creed; Sacramental Living; Belief in Action: Christian Moral Life; and Life in the Spirit.

Sponsored by the Executive Council and the Seabury Press, the new series will build on the original volumes that have been popular over the past 20 years.
