New York, N.Y. -- The National Commission on Hispanic Affairs of the Episcopal Church voted to approve funding for a new number of proposals at a recent meeting held in the Church Center here.
The approvals came in a day long meeting in which the committee also voted to change its name to the National Commission on Hispanic Ministries and began to set direction for more Hispanic participation in the development of Christian education material and the Church's worship.
As a result of the conversations on worship, the Commission agreed to request that the Executive Council "take care that there is Hispanic representation on the Church's committees responsible for liturgy, music and ministry." Members were especially concerned for seminary education and other preparation for ministry.
The approved proposals include: a Cursillo Center in the Diocese of Southeast Florida -- $8,000; a campus ministry in San Antonio, Texas -- $4,000; a diocesan consultant in the Diocese of West Texas -- $8,040; and a grant to the Tercer Instituto Teologico de Verano in the Diocese of Long Island -- $1,500. The Rev. Herbert Arrunategui, National Officer of Hispanic Ministries reported three additional grants to assist Hispanic work by the Diocese of Southern Ohio -- $700; Puerto Rico -- $600; and Southeast Florida -- $500.
