PITTSBURGH, Pa. -- The gathering momentum for the Episcopal Church's Venture in Mission was again evident on January 28 at a diocesan rally in Trinity Cathedral here where a major fund-raising effort was launched.

Representatives of virtually every parish and mission in the Diocese of Pittsburgh crowded the cathedral to hear a sermon by Presiding Bishop John M. Allin and participate in a service supported by ten choirs.

Bishop Allin spoke of "the three dynamics of Christian life -- forgiving, giving, and thanksgiving."

Referring also to the Gospel according to St. John (15:12), Bishop Allin continued: "'This commandment I give you: Love one another.' The translating of those words into your life and experience and into the community which is called the Christian Church is the transforming power of salvation. That's what it's all about and what you and I, by God's grace as we come to experience it, will come to know; not only salvation, but the glory of God. You can't separate them."

The diocese is seeking $3,300,000 in its own Renewal Fund, of which $800,000 has been earmarked for national Venture in Mission projects.

The diocesan campaign -- with the credo "to begin, to believe, to share anew" -- is led by Diocesan Bishop Robert B. Appleyard, with Livingston (Toby) Biddle III as General Chairman. David B. Oliver chairs the "Pattern Gifts" Committee.

During an "exhausting but highly rewarding" two-day stay, Bishop Allin met with a cross-section of diocesan leadership and preached on Sunday at St. Stephen's Church in Sewickley.
