Minneapolis, Minn. -- As of March 1, the Diocese of Minnesota acquired a new bishop, but it didn't exactly lose the "old" one.

The Rt. Rev. Robert M. Anderson, former dean of Salt Lake City, was consecrated Feb. 11 as bishop coadjutor and on the first of the following month took over as bishop from the Rt. Rev. Philip McNairy who retired. However, in an interview with a local newspaper, Bishop McNairy made it clear that he was not looking for a retirement of long, lazy days.

"This diocese simply can't afford a second bishop, but we really need two," he said. "This way, I can work as much as I want on a non-stipendiary basis and live on my pension." He will assist with confirmations, travel and "read books again instead of listening to condensed versions on cassettes in my car."

In other changes in the episcopate, the Rt. Rev. C. Charles Vache will succeed the Rt. Rev. David Rose as Bishop of Southern Virginia on April 1. Bishop Vache' was elected coadjutor bishop of the diocese and consecrated in 1976. Bishop Rose has been diocesan bishop since 1971.

On Feb. 18, the Rt. Rev. C. Judson Child was consecrated a bishop as suffragan to the Rt. Rev. Bennett J. Sims, Bishop of Atlanta. That diocese has been without a suffragan since the Rt. Rev. Milton L. Wood moved to New York in 1974 to join the Executive Council staff.
