Subject : Press Accreditation for Lambeth Conference

Our office has been informed by John Miles, who will serve as Press Officer for the Lambeth Conference at the University of Kent, Canterbury, July 22August 13, that requests for accreditation at the conference far exceed the assigned space. Only 50 members of the working press in toto can be accredited and permitted access to the limited facilities.

The decision has been made by Bishop John Howe's office to include only persons representing national news journals or media, and even this category is subject to restriction. This means that no diocesan press representatives, either from the United States or elsewhere, will be accredited. Nor will those representing highly specialized publications be accredited. This involves not only access to the several plenary sessions planned but to the entire campus facilities.

It is doubtful that there are any more press spaces available even for national church and secular publications at this date.

We sincerely regret that it has become necessary for this accreditation limitation to be placed in effect. It is my plan to issue without delay releases through the Episcopal Church Center office during the progress of the conference and at the end.
