N.W. Texas Vim to Aid Mexican-Americans

LUBBOCK, Tex. -- The Executive Committee of the Diocese of Northwest Texas approved the recommendation of the Diocesan Venture in Mission Committee that a tenth of a financial campaign named Century II be given for training for ministry among Mexican-Americans and the development of self-support for the diocese of Northern Mexico.
The Mexican-American project was proposed by leaders of the Province of the Southwest to provide linguistic, cultural and ministerial training at the Episcopal Seminary of the Southwest located in Austin. The project is listed at $750,000.
The diocese of Northern Mexico has requested a grant of $2,000,000 for a long range program of self-support and autonomy. The diocese is headed by the Rt. Rev. Leonardo Romero of Monterrey, the see city.
Century II is a million-dollar capital fund drive, which includes a contribution of a tithe for selected projects in the world-wide Venture in Mission program of the Episcopal Church.
The Rev. Harland Birdwell, rector of St. Mary, Big Spring, is the chairman of the Diocesan Venture in Mission Committee.
During July, a group of Episcopalians from the diocese visited Mexico in order to learn the work of the church in that country. The group under the leadership o of the Ven. Richard W. Wilson helped in the completion of a cabin and the installation of a tank of well water in a camp owned by the Mexican Diocese.
