NEW YORK -- Marion E. Morey, a production and administration specialist for 17 years, has been named assistant director of the Presiding Bishop's Fund for World Relief. Her appointment was announced in early fall by the Rt. Rev. John M. Allin, Presiding Bishop of the Episcopal Church.
In the position, Miss Morey will work with the executive director, the Rev. Samir J. Habiby in establishing policy, maintaining and developing the network of diocesan relief chairpersons, evaluating and supervising the granting process and in ecumenical representation.
She is native of Illinois and a graduate in sociology and English from Carroll College in Wisconsin and the task with the Presiding Bishop's Fund represents a major career shift for a woman who has spent most of her life in publishing production supervision.
"The further I got up in the publishing world, " she said, " the less fun it became. But my gift has always been to be able to meld other people's talents to produce something. When I left my last post in publishing, I decided that it was time to try to combine my gifts in administration with my background in sociology and see if I couldn't really do something for people. "
A Congregationalist by birth, she began to associate with the Episcopal Church while attending Wells College in upstate New York. Soon she found herself confirmed in the Church and actively involved with it. She is a member of Holy Trinity Church on the Upper East Side of New York.
She views the job with the Presiding Bishop's Fund as having two levels. "The first is the sort of scholarly: the work with the grants and evaluation. Having to dig into those and examine them is a deeply rewarding task."
The other side for her is the public contact, both through the grants work and even more directly in plans she is involved in with Habiby to assist the diocesan networks. More planning work in this area will be undertaken in December.
Finally, she has a deep commitment to developing a close collaboration with other granting agencies of the Church an d with the Church Center and other program staffs "with a goal of helping to bring people to a real outpouring of time, talent and energy."
